In-water abundance and density estimates of harbor seals (2013-16)

Investigators: Mari Smultea (Smultea Sciences), Thomas Jefferson (Clymene Enterprises), and Eric Ward (NOAA)

This project analyzes aerial survey data from 2013 – 2016 to identify seasonal and geographical trends in harbor seal density and abundance and compare spatial and temporal overlap in salmon and harbor seal occurrence to assess the extent of harbor seal predation on Puget Sound salmonids of concern including Chinook, coho, and steelhead. These data are needed to understand predation impacts to Puget Sound salmon and to track seal populations and meet federal Marine Mammal Protection Act requirements.
